Greater Sudbury Welcomes Delegation from the Consulate General of Hungary

The City of Greater Sudbury was honoured to host a delegation from the Consulate General of Hungary in Toronto at Tom Davies Square on Tuesday October 28, marking an exciting step toward international collaboration and innovation.

Mayor Paul Lefebvre, joined by members of the City’s Economic Development team, welcomed:

• János Jákó, Consul General
• Máté Árpád Igaz, Deputy Head of Mission
• Gábor Péter Markocsány, Consul and Diaspora Liaison Diplomat

The visit focused on shared interests in battery production, the supply of critical minerals and potential partnerships between Canadian and Hungarian universities.

Hungary is rapidly becoming a European leader in electric vehicle (EV) battery production, with major investments from global firms. By 2030, the country is expected to rank second worldwide in planned battery manufacturing capacity despite not mining critical minerals domestically. This reliance on imports presents opportunities for strategic partnerships with regions like Greater Sudbury, known for its responsibly produced resources and innovation in clean technologies.

Following their meeting with the City, the delegation visited local organizations to further explore Greater Sudbury’s expertise and identify opportunities for future collaboration.

This inaugural visit laid the foundation for a growing relationship between Greater Sudbury and Hungary, built on shared priorities of sustainability, innovation and economic development. Greater Sudbury continues to position itself as a leader in clean technology, mining innovation, and international partnerships.
