Greater Sudbury Small Businesses Eligible for Next Step Support Program

The City of Greater Sudbury is supporting the navigation of small businesses through the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic with a new provincial program delivered through its Regional Business Centre.

The Next Step Small Business Support Program is an initiative of the Ontario Together Fund and the province’s Small Business COVID Recovery Network. Local businesses with less than 100 employees may be eligible to access complimentary one-time professional services of up to $1,500 for new projects or initiatives that aid economic recovery, adjust operations and/or establish new revenue streams.

“The City recognizes the challenges facing our economy and we remain committed to helping every local business owner weather the COVID-19 crisis,” said Mayor Brian Bigger. “The Next Step Small Business Support Program is an excellent example of our City’s commitment to leveraging intergovernmental partnerships that generate new economic activity. We look forward to the results of this exciting initiative over the months to come.”

The program will provide successful applicants with complimentary services of up to $1,500 through direct payment to a pre-selected third party that may include:

  • Digital Marketing Experts to update and modernize a website and/or adopt e-commerce platforms for selling products/services
  • Marketing Consultants to identify pivot points in marketing strategies
  • Accountants to assist in applying for government assistance programs for small business
  • Architects/Engineers to redesign a space to safely and productively operate with health measures in place as well as post pandemic

“The potential of the Next Step Small Business Support Program extends beyond the pandemic,” said GSDC Board Chair Andrée Lacroix. “The Greater Sudbury Development Corporation fully endorses this opportunity for local entrepreneurs to create a current and post-pandemic business model that will not only survive but thrive as we move through this crisis.”

Eligible full-time businesses must have registered as a sole proprietor, partnership or corporation prior to March 1, 2020. Applications will remain open between April 8 and May 2, 2021. The Regional Business Centre will evaluate all proposals for new projects or activities that engage professional services from May 15 to August 31, 2021.
