Students Explore Entrepreneurship Through Summer Company Program

A record 16 student entrepreneurs have launched their own businesses this summer through the 2025 Summer Company program, delivered by the City of Greater Sudbury’s Regional Business Centre.

Fourteen participants are funded through the Government of Ontario’s Summer Company program, while two additional exclusive grants are sponsored by The Foundry at Laurentian University.

“I want to congratulate all the young people who’ve taken a leap, built something of their own and grown in confidence along the way,” said Greater Sudbury Mayor Paul Lefebvre. “We’re proud to support them through the Summer Company program as they explore what’s possible and gain skills that will stay with them for years to come.”

The program provides training, mentorship and start-up grants of up to $3,000 to help students turn their ideas into viable summer businesses. Participants developed business plans, including financial projections and budgeting, to assess the feasibility of their ideas. Throughout the summer, they will continue working with the Regional Business Centre team to build their knowledge in key areas such as marketing, sales strategies and financial management.

“The Foundry at Laurentian University is proud to support students as they explore entrepreneurship,” said Gisèle Roberts, Director of Research and Innovation Services at Laurentian University. “These young business owners are a testament to the potential that can be unlocked when education and community partnerships come together. This year, we were especially pleased to provide grants through the Foundry that enabled international students to take part in the program, recognizing that innovation is strengthened by diverse perspectives and that their contributions enrich the entrepreneurial landscape at Laurentian.”

Training and mentorship provided through the program have helped participants confidently launch their businesses and begin promoting their products and services in the community.
