Greater Sudbury Development Corporation Continues to Drive Economic Growth

The Greater Sudbury Development Corporation (GSDC) supported numerous key projects and initiatives throughout 2023 that continue to foster entrepreneurship, strengthen partnerships, and drive the growth of Greater Sudbury as a vibrant and healthy city. The GSDC’s 2023 Annual Report was presented to City Council on October 22, 2024.
A not-for-profit agency of the City of Greater Sudbury, the GSDC acts as a catalyst for economic development initiatives and supports the attraction, development and retention of business in the community, working in close collaboration with City Council.
“It has been a pleasure to work with the dedicated industry leaders who volunteer on the GSDC board as we continue to grow and strengthen our city,” said Greater Sudbury Mayor Paul Lefebvre. “The GSDC’s 2023 Annual Report showcases some of the projects that are helping drive innovation and excellence in the various sectors within our community.”

The GSDC provides oversight for the Rural and Northern Immigration Pilot (RNIP) program in alignment with Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) requirements, and has provided funding since the pilot’s inception in 2019. The RNIP program attracts diverse talent to the community and provides support for newcomers when they arrive. In 2023, there were 524 applications approved through the program, resulting in 1,024 total newcomers to the community, which includes family members. As of September 2024, Greater Sudbury has welcomed approximately 1,400 applicants, which translates to 2,700 new residents, and the RNIP program has also engaged over 700 employers in the community.

“The GSDC is committed to fostering innovative ideas and opportunities, attracting potential businesses, and forging new partnerships,” said Jeff Portelance, GSDC Board Chair. “These initiatives contribute to the growth of our economy, increase business investment, and showcase our expertise and resources. We sincerely appreciate the ongoing support from City Council as we work together to build a more dynamic and prosperous future for Greater Sudbury.”
Through recommendations of the GSDC Board, the following funding was approved by City Council in 2023:
  • The Community Economic Development Fund (CED) targets not-for-profit organizations with projects that provide an economic benefit to the community. In 2023, the GSDC board approved $692,840 in funding through the CED program. These dollars supported seven projects across numerous sectors and were leveraged to secure a total combined project value of $3,009,009. Some of the projects supported were Studio NORCAT, Sudbury Indie Cinema programming and operations, and Downtown Sudbury’s Welcoming Streets Initiative which provided two support workers in the core as a direct support line for businesses and local populations.
  • The Arts and Culture Grant program stimulates economic growth of the community’s creative agencies while investing in our quality of life. In 2023, the GSDC approved $604,066 to support 32 organizations through this program including YES Theatre, Le Théâtre du Nouvel-Ontario Inc., Northern Lights Festival Boréal and Cinéfest Sudbury.
  • The Tourism Development Fund (TDF) was established by the GSDC to promote and grow the tourism industry in Greater Sudbury by directing funds for tourism marketing and product development opportunities. In 2023, the TDF provided a total of $481,425 to community projects including the Onaping Falls Recreation Committee’s AY Jackson Lookout project, Up Here 9 and Kivi Park.
