Greater Sudbury Development Corporation Seeks Members for Tourism Development Committee

The Greater Sudbury Development Corporation (GSDC), a not-for-profit board dedicated to championing economic development in the City of Greater Sudbury, is currently seeking engaged and passionate residents to join its Tourism Development Committee.

As a sub-committee of the GSDC Board, the Tourism Development Committee plays a key role in providing expert advice, recommendations, and insights to enhance decision-making and strengthen support for Sudbury’s growing tourism sector.

We are seeking applicants from the following sectors:

  • Arts & Culture: 1 Position Available
  • Retail Sector: 1 Position Available

How to Apply:
Interested community members are invited to submit their resume and cover letter to [email protected] by 4:00 p.m. on November 13th, 2024

What We’re Looking For:
We encourage residents of Greater Sudbury with a passion for tourism, community growth, and economic development to apply. Applicants should have experience or expertise in their sector and a desire to contribute to the growth of the local tourism industry.

Committee Members, in collaboration with the Business Development Officer for Tourism, will be responsible for reviewing and evaluating applications submitted monthly through the Tourism Development Fund’s online portal, hosted on SurveyMonkey. Each application will be assessed using a scoring matrix that aligns with the Tourism Development Guidelines and the From the Ground Up Community Economic Development Strategic Plan, which is part of the Tourism Strategy and Action Plan.

After reviewing the materials, committee members will score the applications based on the outlined criteria. Staff will work closely with the committee to develop funding recommendations, considering both the merit of the applications and the available resources. These recommendations will then be forwarded to the GSDC Board for final approval and allocation of funds.

Committee members will be selected to ensure fair representation of the tourism industry, including gender, generational, and cultural diversity. All members must be residents of the City of Greater Sudbury and at least 18 years of age.

The committee will include three representatives from the Hotel & Accommodation Association of Sudbury (HAAS), along with members from the GSDC board, Science North/Dynamic Earth, the retail sector, arts and culture, and the culinary industry. This diverse composition ensures a well-rounded evaluation process for local tourism organizations.

The Tourism Development Committee meets monthly for approximately two hours, with additional meetings scheduled as needed. These meetings focus on reviewing new and emerging opportunities, such as event bids, assessing submissions to the Tourism Development Fund, evaluating the previous year’s results, and developing the work plan and budget for the upcoming year.

The committee also reviews scheduled updates on projects and plans in accordance with the work plan. The recommendations generated from these discussions will influence funding decisions, which will be reviewed and finalized by the GSDC Board of Directors.

Written letters or résumés should be addressed to Leah Stack, Business Development Officer, and emailed to [email protected]. Letters should clearly outline your reasons for wanting to join the committee, your connections to the tourism industry, and how your experience can contribute to the growth and attraction of Greater Sudbury’s tourism sector.
