Celebrating Film In Sudbury
The 35th edition of Cinéfest Sudbury International Film Festival kicks off at SilverCity Sudbury this Saturday, September 16 and runs until Sunday, September 24. Greater Sudbury has a lot to celebrate at this year’s festival!
Fitting In, filmed in Greater Sudbury last summer under the title Bloody Hell, will screen at 8 p.m. on Monday, September 18. The film stars Emily Hampshire (Schitt’s Creek), Maddie Ziegler (Steven Spielberg’s West Side Story), Djouliet Amara (Riverdale) and D’Pharaoh Woon-A-Tai (Reservation Dogs) and tells the funny and poignant tale of a teenage girl coming to grips with a rare health diagnosis. The film first screened at this year’s SXSW and was shown as part of Toronto International Film Festival’s Centrepiece series.
Adaptation, a documentary from Greater Sudbury filmmaker Jake Thomas, screens on Wednesday, September 20 at 6 p.m. and follows a group of wheelchair athletes as they compete in the world’s first downhill adaptive mountain bike race series.
Lingering Pieces, the Greater Sudbury-shot short film debut of director Jacqueline Lamb, will screen as part of the Short Circuit program on Thursday, September 21 at 12:30 p.m.
Born and raised in Sudbury, producer Amos Adetuyi has two films screening at this year’s Cinefest, both shot in Greater Sudbury.
Inspired by true events, Café Daughter tells the story of a nine-year-old Chinese-Cree girl who confronts racism in her 1960s Saskatchewan classroom. The film screens at 2 p.m. on Friday, September 22.
Orah, a deeply personal revenge thriller from director Lonzo Nzekwe, shot partially in Nigeria and screened during this year’s TIFF Industry Selects program. It screens on Saturday, September 23 at 4 p.m.

Cinema Summit
Presented by Cultural Industries Ontario North (CION), the Cinema Summit takes place from September 20-23 during Cinéfest and consists of Film Industry panels, networking and workshops. This year’s conference has seen a record number of applicants, and promises to be a valuable opportunity for Northerners to advance their careers in the Film Industry.

-launching your career as a filmmaker and
-many more from a stable of Canada’s most prominent filmmakers.

CTV Best in Shorts
The CTV Best in Shorts competition takes place as part of Cinéfest this Saturday, Sept. 23 at 12 p.m. The program consists of 8 films with four Greater Sudbury filmmakers who have been selected: Ian Johnson (A Bunch of Junk), J. Christian Hamilton (Go On and Bleed), Stéphane Ostrander (My Authentic Self (A Journey with Art and Autism)) and Sabrina Wilson (When Little Johnny Sleeps).
CTV Best in Shorts gives emerging Northern Ontario filmmakers an opportunity to screen their film to a festival audience, receive exposure within the film industry, and to compete for cash prizes.
