Vale logoVale is the world's largest producer of iron ore and pellets, key raw materials for steelmaking, and the world's second largest producer of nickel, which is used to produce stainless steel and metal alloys. Vale also produces manganese, ferroalloys, thermal and coking coal, copper, cobalt, platinum group metals and fertilizer nutrients. Vale is a truly global company, mining in two hemispheres, operating on five continents, and employing more than 134,000 people in 38 countries.

Vale's base metals business, which includes nickel, copper, PGMs, precious metals and cobalt, is headquartered in Toronto. Its Canadian Operations currently employ more than 6,000 professionals and provide mining opportunities across Canada.

In Greater Sudbury, Vale is home to six mines, a mill, a smelter and a refinery– making it one of the largest integrated mining operations in the world. In addition to the rich deposits of base metals that Vale currently mines in the Sudbury region, exploration efforts continue to discover additional deposits of nickel, copper and precious metals.

Sudbury is also the heart of Vale's environmental initiatives. In partnership with the community, Vale has made great strides in our environmental recovery program, both in terms of reducing atmospheric emissions and reclamation activities. Our improved mining practices and support in the re-greening of the region helped make Sudbury one of twelve world cities awarded the Local Government Honours Award at the 1992 United Nations Earth Summit.

Vale is committed to the pursuit of sustainable growth by maximizing the potential of existing operations, realizing the promise of growth projects, operating with respect for the natural environment and being an ethically and socially responsible company.
